Berea College itself is a pioneer in progressive education. Founded in 1855 by abolitionists John Gregg Fee and Cassius Marcellus Clay, the college was the first in the South to be both racially integrated and coeducational. Every student attends tuition-free, thanks to generous endowment support, and participates in at least ten hours of labor each week across more than 130 departments.
